This House to become a BBC drama2/10/2013 James Graham's National Theatre hit 'This House', which starred Philip Glenister, is to become a BBC television political drama.
James Graham had a huge hit at the National Theatre with his play This House, about the hung parliaments of the Seventies. Now, The Telegraph hears that the talented 31-year-old playwright has been invited by the BBC develop it as a television series. There is no news on casting yet though. “It’s too early to talk about casting, but I loved the actors who brought it alive when it was first staged as a play,” says Graham of last year’s production which starred Philip Glenister, Julian Wadham and Rupert Vansittart. “Things can go awry in the world of television development, but I’m thrilled that they are interested in it.” In the his interview, Graham also commented on politicians who came to see This House. “George Osborne came along to see This House and said he enjoyed it.” Unfortunately, This House missed out at tonight's Olivier Awards. It lost to Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time in both it's nominated categories; Best Director and Best New Play. However, In other This House news, you can now buy a print of the poster used for the Cottesloe run in which Philip Glenister starred. The prints (which can be purchased here) start at £20 and you can choose from 'Fine Art Print', 'Photo Print' or 'Canvas' in a variety of sizes. The price does change depending on the selections you make. The London Evening Standard reports that Philip Glenister and John Simm were in last night's audience at the National Theatre for the performance of This House.
On the eve of Margaret Thatcher's death, they were joined by more than two dozen MPs of the Thatcher era including Tory grandee Sir Peter Viggers and Baroness Bottomley and her husband Sir Peter. Most had booked seats on the green benches on the stage where actors playing MPs mingle with audience members. Whilst Mrs Thatcher doesn’t appear in the play, her presence looms large in the background as Jim Callaghan's Labour government heads for the exit. We wonder what Philip thought of the transfer and the actor now playing his role? Must have been strange to watch. Were you at last night's performance? Did you see Phil and John? If so please let us know. This House has faced further disappointment in the theatre award season...it has made the WOS short-list in only one category: 'Best Lighting Design' (Paule Cole for 'This House' and 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time' at the National's Cottesloe). We of course wish it good luck in it's category but we are disappointed that none of the actors are being honoured for what is a fantastic play. The awards will be held on the 17th February 2013. This House missed out on the award for 'Best Play' at this evening's 58th London Evening Standard Theatre Awards. The award went to Constellations by Nick Payne (Royal Court Upstairs). This House lost out in the 'Best Actor' category too, with Simon Russell Beale beating Charles Edwards for his role in The Collaborators (National Theatre - Cottesloe) Hopefully it will fare better at the What'sOnStage Awards. The Digital Theatre website is providing live coverage of tonight's 58th Evening Standard Theatre Awards, at which 'This House' is nominated for Best Play. Of course, we will be updating the site with news and photographs as soon as possible. We would also like to take this opportunity to wish Philip Glenister and the rest of the cast and crew good luck for tonight's awards. |
