First photos from Poirot: Curtain

30/10/2013

The first photos of Philip in Poirot's final ever case, Curtain, have been released by ITV.
Philip also gave the following interview ahead of the shows broadcast.

How did you secure the role of Sir William Boyd Carrington?
David Suchet and I worked on a BBC drama called Hidden. While we were filming he asked me if I’d ever been in a Poirot. I hadn’t. Later, I then received a personal invitation from Hercule himself! I wasn’t going to say no to that. Curtain is the last ever Poirot, so it’s a pretty big deal for any actor.

Are you a fan of Agatha Christie?
During the summer I was in Devon and went to Greenway (Agatha Christie’s holiday home), where some of Dead Man’s Folly was filmed. It was interesting to walk around her estate knowing I had been a part of the last ever Poirot. It was a fascinating and intriguing place to visit.

Was it nice to return to a period drama after recently filming more contemporary roles?
Absolutely. The film is set ten years after The Labours of Hercules, in the mid- twentieth century, and that’s not a period I had done before. What really struck me about the whole production of Poirot was the attention to detail. Whether it’s makeup, props, costume, design, it is a real team effort done with great care. When you step onto set it’s literally like stepping back in time.

Tell us about your character.
It has to be said, I’m not an obvious casting choice for the role! Sir Carrington is a former governor of the province of India, an aristocrat who is rather eccentric. He was a very enjoyable character to play.

What is Sir Carrington’s relationship like with Barbara Franklin (Anna Madeley)?
Carrington is rather taken with ‘Babs’, and I think they’d be together if the circumstances were different.
Carrington believes Babs could do a lot better for herself if she wasn’t with that drab, boring husband, Dr Franklin, who is stuck in a lab all day. I think she would agree her life would be a lot more exciting if she were with Carrington!

Were you surprised to see a very different looking Poirot on set?
Yes. To achieve a frail and much older look David had to lose a lot of weight before filming. His commitment to the role is phenomenal and I have nothing but the upmost respect for him as a person and an actor.

What do you think is the appeal of Agatha Christie’s stories?
First and foremost, it’s good storytelling. The stories themselves are just brilliant, they’re really well acted, and the attention to detail really lets the whole thing run away with your imagination. The adaptations are just like opening one of her books, which means the production team have succeeded in doing what they set out to do.

What is David Suchet like to work with?
David is good fun to be around. Whenever he has the moustache on he behaves like Poirot even if he’s not being filmed. It’s clear to see how much the character means to him – Poirot is David’s legacy.

Was it emotional to film the final episode?
The most emotional part was watching the reunion between Poirot and Captain Hastings, played by Hugh Fraser. There is a wonderfully moving scene where Hastings is reading a passage from Othello to Poirot. They played it with such integrity. It was a pleasure to watch.
Thanks to Suze for the find!

Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us...
We know this post is a little late, as there's less than quarter an hour of the day left, but today we have been celebrating ONE YEAR of this fansite. We did have an online presence over on Tumblr for approximately 14 months prior to the launch of this new site, but the move enabled us to expand our work and become more flexible and user friendly.

Anyway, we just wanted to say an enormous thank you to our visitors and contributors for making our first year as a fully fledged site so wonderful and eventful! Without you guys this site would be no where near as amazing as it is.

As a thank you we have updated our 'Radio Projects' page with some additional audio and have added some new videos to the 'Other TV Shows' section, including Phil's episodes of The Bill and Drop the Dead Donkey. We hope you enjoy them.

It's been an amazing ride, and here's to many more years of PhilipGlenisterFans. Help yourself to cake (lol) and have a glass of "house rubbish" on us!

Filming on Phil's new BBC drama 'From There to Here' has wrapped.

The final shoot took place on Friday (25th) with the wrap party being held in Manchester on Friday night.

The show will now go into post-production and we begin our wait to see the finished product, which we're expecting early next year.

In the meantime catch up on some filming reports from one of our admin team and fan, Louise.

As for what Phil will be up to now, well we're hearing rumours of a new show for Channel 4. There is nothing official, but we've got our ears to the ground and will let you know of any more information when we have it.

The short feature, which you can view below, was filmed in Stockport Market and contains contributions from the writer, Peter Bowker, some stall holders and Philip himself as well as some small clips of the show being filmed.
From There to Here will be broadcast on BBC One in 2014.

Life on Mars - one of the top ten dramas of the decade

18/10/2013

Picture
Life on Mars has finished eighth in a list of 'Top Ten Dramas of the Decade' in Room 101-102 magazine.

The list was compiled by the editors of the magazine and is based on their own personal opinions. Still, it shows what a massive impact the show had, and still has, for it to make it. Especially when you consider the calibre of the other dramas on the list (the full list can be found at the end of this article.

In it's analysis of the show, the website says,

Picture the scene. Police officer Sam Tyler is hit by a car. He survives, comes round and gets back to work – except inexplicably he has been transported from 2006 back to a world of sexism, racism and bad dress sense. Sounds like another world? It could well be but in fact it’s Manchester in 1973. Unable to find his way back, Tyler gets on with the job in hand, drawing stark contrasts between the policing methods and social framework of the same country 30 years apart.

The creation of the desperately politically incorrect DCI Gene Hunt, played by Philip Glenister, provides a fascinating vehicle through which to explore some of the more gritty issues of 1970s England, while random coincidences and bizarre communications maintain the intrigue as Tyler clings on to the hope of one day returning to his parallel life.

Stars: John Simm, Philip Glenister, Liz White, Dean Andrews, Marshall Lancaster

Created by: Matthew Graham, Tony Jordan, Ashley Pharoah

Verdict: Out of this world
The full list is as follows:
  1. Sopranos
  2. Sherlock
  3. The Wire
  4. Downton Abbey
  5. Luther
  6. Spooks
  7. Mad Men
  8. Life on Mars (UK Version)
  9. Merlin
  10. Lost
So do you agree? Is eighth a high enough finish for Life on Mars? Would you have substituted any other dramas (starring Phil or not)? Let us know your thoughts below.

Philip's ep of Poirot to air before the end of the year?

12/10/2013

With the release of the new Poirot trailer, ITV have announced that the final four episodes will be broadcast from 23rd October.

Now, ITV haven't given any indication of specific schedule but it does seem likely that Philip's episode (Curtain) will air before the end of this year or very early next year. If the episodes are to air weekly then Curtain should air around the 13th November, if monthly then it will be January 2013.

Hopefully it won't be any longer than that - David Suchet has tweeted us to say that he thinks it will be before the end of the year!
Picture
As with everything, keep an eye on our site and our twitter - we'll bring you more information as soon as we have it!

EDIT (15/10/2013): The 2nd of the four has been confirmed for the week after the first - suggesting Philip's ep will air on 13th November. We'll let you know when this is confirmed.
