Louise's Report: Filming From There to Here (October 2013)
When in Manchester city centre, Louise came across some filming of From There to Here. Read about her experience here...
I went to Manchester on 4th October, to try and see if I could see some filming. I started out near the Tibb Street car park and then carried on walking around that area. but didn’t seem to be much happening, so I decided to forget about it and leave. As I approached Hilton street I saw all the debris, smoke and a cordoned off area and, completely forgetting the purpose of my visit, my first thought was 'WHAT’S HAPPENED?'. I then turned to my left and saw Philip and thought 'OMG'.
He was casually dressed in a grey suit with an open-necked blue shirt. Bernard Hill was also in a suit, although I think he wore a tie and Steven Mackintosh was in black trousers, a white unbuttoned shirt and a black leather jacket. Liz White wore a dark grey/navy shop or café dress with a grey tunic. Her black tights were torn and her legs were bloodied. (Bernard Hill also had blood to his face). Each of them had varying amounts of dust from the debris on them.
Standing behind the cordon, I saw that all the windows in the 'shop' had been blown out and that some of the mannequins and various other shop items were in the doorway door, hanging out of the empty window frames or lying on the ground. The light of the shop was flickering and the Marks and Spencer sign was hanging from the shops exterior. The undamaged red post box stood outside the shop. Nearby stood a billboard advertising the Euro 96 tournament. All around were small fires and smoke, which were extremely effective. To the left was a news stand. Just off Hilton Street stood a retro fire engine and a police car. There was also blue/grey retro car with a smashed rear window and milling around were various extras as paramedics, police and fire crew members.
For a while the actors stood chatting whilst the crew and make-up artists did their bits. Then suddenly the actors stopped being themselves and took on their various characters. It was really quite something watching that happen. All acted very well, especially Phil.
I was quite shocked by the number of people in the crowd with cameras etc. who didn’t know what was being filmed. I had to tell a few people what the programme/drama would be called and what it was about. I even heard a TV crew member tell a man in the crowd what the drama would be called and what it was about. She said it was a three part drama and that it would be aired after Christmas and think she said it would be one hour long, but don't quote me. Also a number of passers-by stopped and asked what had happened, thinking that it was a real incident that had occurred.
I stayed and watched for some time. After filming here the actors etc. went to film on Mangle Street. I did go and see what was being done there but all I saw was the entrance to a nightclub. I didn't hang around here too long though.
The next day, I took my other half into Manchester to show him where I’d seen the filming. By the time we got there most of the area had been cleared, but we remained in Manchester for some time. As we were about to go home something made us return to Hilton Street. By now everything had virtually returned to normal and they were just beginning to remove the cordons and allow traffic down the road. We couldn't believe it was the same road; it looked so different. (Kudos to the crew for a job well done.)
As we began to make my way down Hilton Street we saw a number of TV crew outside the Koffee Pot. There were also two lights pointing towards the café and a sign outside saying 'Sorry We're Not Open'. Went to stand outside the café. Although the place was rather full I couldn’t really see anything happening. After about 5/10 minutes we moved position slightly and saw that Phil and Steven Mackintosh were being filmed indoors. Managed to get some pics.
As the TV crew were allowing people to walk right past the café and even look into it I decided to do the same. It was amazing being so close to what was going on. However when I went past all I managed was to give Phil a quick glance and walk on.
Still can't believe that I have seen Phil act live twice during the same week in my home town. Although I didn't manage to speak to any of the actors the memories will stay with me for a long time as it was two truly amazing days. All I can say is I can't wait for this to be aired
