Celebrity Cup 2018 - Day Two

1/7/2018

The second day was quite a contrast to the first – Phil was most definitely on form.
Team Wales met Team England in the 3rd round, with Phil pairing up with Scott Quinnell to take on Mike Tindall and Peter Jones.  Phil and Scott won their match comfortably at 6 points to 3. This result, combined with another win and a draw, saw Wales top the leaderboard  and set up a final against 2nd place England.

For the final, Phil once again paired up with Scott and faced Mike Tindall and Graeme Swann. Phil had a belter this round – making six birdies and scoring par or under on all holes – and he and Scott won 6 - 3 again.  But, the final came down to a nail-biting finish though as Jonathan Davies and Ieuan Evans had only drawn their match and Gethin Jones and Gareth Edwards were losing. But victory came on Gethin and Gareth’s 8th hole. Wales went two points up with only one hole left to play.

Final Standings:
1st: Wales
2nd: England
3rd: Scotland
4th: Ireland

Congratulations Wales. The event raised over £40,000 (double the original target) for the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff. There is still time to donate to this fabulous cause too, via their just giving page.

Celebrity Cup 2018 Day One

30/6/2018

This weekend, Phil is  playing  in the Celebrity Cup at The Celtic Manor Resort. This event is a two-day charity golf tournament that pits celebrities from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland against one another. Philip plays for Wales, thanks to his mother's Welsh heritage.

Philip who only wrapped filming on Living the Dream yesterday flew straight from Spain to the tournament, missing the first day preamble and warm ups.
The first fixture of the day was Wales v Scotland. For his match, Philip was paired with Gareth Edwards and they faced Scottish rugby player brothers Max and Thom Evans.

It didn't go well. Phil made bogeys on his first three holes, which wasn't helped by a double bogey from Gareth. The final result was a loss for Phil and Gareth and with Wales only winning one of the other two matches they found themselves at the bottom of the leaderboard going into lunch.

For his second round fixture, Philip was paired up with BBC Rugby commentator Jonathan Davies. They faced an Irish team of actor, James Nesbitt and  former Westlife start, Brian McFadden.

Philip and Jonathan faired far better in this game (winning 5.5 to 3.5 - as did Wales in general, winning 2 out of the three matches. The end of the day scoreboard looked a lot healthier with Wales in 2nd.

Celebrity Cup - Day 2

10/7/2016

The final day of the celebrity cup began with Team Wales facing England. Philip was paired up with Sir Gareth Edwards and faced Denise Van Outen and Anton Du Beke. You can watch the first shots from the match below.
It wasa good match for Phil, who made par on all but 2 holes. The match finished 6-3 to Wales.  In the overall individual standings, Philip finished joint 5th with Brian McFadden and Ioan Grufford.

Despite Team Wales winning two and drawing the other of their three round matches, it wasn't enough. They finished third in the group standing, setting up a playoff match with England.
In the final, Philip was paired with fellow actor Ioan Grufford and faced off against Chris Hollins and Ben Shepherd.  IThe first half of the match didn't go to well for Phil, who made a double bogey on the first three holes, but he improved dramatically in the second half making par or below on the final three holes and even a hole-in-one on the 8th.

Their match finished 4-3 with to wales but they narrowly lost the entire playoff 10-11.
The winners of the tournament were Scotland, who beat England in a dramatic final that went to sudden death.

Celebrity Cup - Day 1

9/7/2016

This weekend, Philip is playing in the Celebrity Cup, a two-day charity golf tournament which pits teams of celebrities from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland against each other. Philip is Team Wales (the reigning champions) due to his mother's Welsh heritage.
In the first round, Wales were drawn against Ireland and Philip was paired with BBC rugby commentator, Jonathan Davis against the stars of Mrs Brown's Boys, Brendan and Danny O'Carroll.

Philip had a great start to his match (as you can see from the video below) and he and Jonathon went on to win the match for Wales, 7 holes to 2.
After lunch, however, their luck began to run out. Paired with Gethin Jones and pitted against a Scottish team of Michael Jamieson and Greig Laidlaw, both Welshmen made a couple of double bogeys which ultimately cost them their second round match. (It finished 6 holes to 3.)

Here's how things stand at the end of day 1 - Wales need to come up with something special on day 2 to have any hope of retaining their title.

#CelebrityCup - Day Two

6/7/2014

The second day of the Celebrity Cup got underway at Celtic Manor just after 10 o’clock this morning with Philip teaming up with Gareth Edwards to face Scotland’s Kenny Logan and Gavin Hastings. Wales were second to Scotland who were leading the table so it was important that Wales won as many holes as possible.

Sadly that wasn’t to be the case. Despite Phil having a better game in the third round (scoring a birdie and making par on several holes), he and Gareth could only draw with Kenny and Gavin – with both teams taking 4.5 holes.

The other matches didn't got the right way either and Wales finished the group joint second with England on holes won, but England went through as they had played less shots overall.

Despite this there was plenty of camaraderie between the stars in the morning session, as Gethin Jones and Rory Lawson paused for a hug, and Philip Glenister put his arm round Gavin Hastings shortly before they finished their final shots before lunch. When Glenister and Edwards lost drew with Scotland shortly after noon, Edwards told the crowd: "We'll be cheering on Woosy and all those guys in the coming weeks but it's our day today and you (Philip Glenister) really represented Wales."

Philip replied: "I was inspired, I was playing with a legend."

So Wales faced Ireland in a third place playoff this afternoon, with both teams eager not to finish last. Phil was paired with Andrew Howard and faced Danny O’Carroll and Martin O’Neill. Philip and Andrew actually lost their match 4-5, but it didn’t matter too much to the final result. In the end, it was Wales who prevailed, beating Ireland 15-12 to claim the third spot.

England went on to win the final  – beating reigning champions Scotland - to be crowned 2014 winners

Here’s a selection of photos from the weekend – visit our dedicated gallery to view more.
We have also created a short video montage of some of Phil's moments from the tournament thanks to Russ Lindsay and The Celtic Manor Resort for the clips:
