The Return of  Gene Hunt?

1/4/2020

Picture
Tonight, during a live-tweeting rewatch of Life on Mars S1, Ep 1, co-creators Matthew Graham and Ashely Pharoah confirmed that they will be revisiting the Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes universe in a "Final Chapter" to the franchise.

"We would never make another Mars unless we really had something to say and could push the envelope all over again. Finally we have something," Graham promised.

In a series of tweets, he teased a few details for the upcoming show, including
  • They’re envisaging 4 or 5 episodes
  • It will be set in Manchester and London
  • It will visit the 70s, 80s and an alternate now
  • There will be appearances from the Ford Cortina, Audi Quattro & a Chinese wall of cardboard boxes.
  • DCI Litton will return
  • Keats will very probably return
  • They want to get as many returning characters from both shows as possible

There’s no time frame for this, so watch this space for further information.

In Conversation with Philip Glenister & John Simm

16/8/2018

Picture
Philip Glenister and John Simm are to be  reunited following the hugely popular TV shows Life on Mars, Mad Dogs, Prey and State of Play for an exclusive In Conversation at the Orange Tree. Theatre, Richmond.

Philip has been a great supporter of the Orange Tree Theatre over the past few years and with just half of the OT’s income coming from ticket sales, they need to raise a further £450,000 a year. This special one-off fundraiser will be an evening of great insights – intimate and up-close – with two of Britain’s most popular actors. The event will be chaired by OT Artistic Director Paul Miller.

The event will take place on Sunday 16th September 2018 and tickets are priced at £48 (there are a limited number of £20 tickets available for people under 30)  and are available now from the Orange Tree Theatre website.

Charity Auction: Life on Mars script signed by Phil and John Simm

21/6/2016

We are very excited to be able to announce that we are fundraising in partnership with one of the charities that Phil is patron of.

Momentum is a charity working locally in Surrey and South West London, supporting families whose children have cancer or a life-limiting condition.

To help our fundraising efforts, Phil has kindly donated an original Life on Mars script (for Series 2, Episode 4) signed by himself and co-star, John Simm. This was Phil’s own copy of the script and may contain notes about filming and dialogue changes.

The script is currently being auctioned through eBay, with a starting price of £100. THe auction will end on 27th Jun, 2016 at 12:29 pm BST.
Picture
All proceeds from this auction with go straight to Momentum to provide individually-tailored support through their family support programme, (offering emotional and practical help as well as a range of therapy services including music, dance and drama), to provide trips, treats and respite holidays to improve the facilities and healing environment for children during hospital stays.
If you are unable to bid for the script, please do consider making a small, one-off donation to support the work of this fantastic charity. (If you do this, be sure to mention the Fansite in the message box so we can keep a total of how much we have raised).

Confused about the ending to #MadDogs? We can help!

30/12/2013

Picture
We've had several messages both on Twitter and through this site from confused fans asking us to explain the ending to Mad Dogs.

It's not been easy (we were as confused as you were on first viewing) but after a bit of thought and some (okay, rather a lot) of help from the internet, we think we've finally got it and will post it below for the benefit of our visitors.

Obviously this will contain spoilers so please don't press the button below unless you've seen the final ever episode. We cannot be held responsible if you spoil it for yourself.

All four of them were actually shot and died on the beach (and presumably buried in the pre dug graves).

The scenes that followed were of their souls leaving the beach (together, because that’s how they started this whole journey). Them driving off the road was symbolic to them driving off the road to hell, because of all the bad choices/mistakes they had made in their lives.

Baxter saw himself behind the Tiny Blair mask because the four of them were their own worst enemies and ultimately, it was their own actions and mistakes that lead to their deaths.

Other points to note:

- That poster that’s featured in nearly every series… it translates as ‘road to nowhere’. A little bit of foreshadowing their perhaps?
- Baxter killing Carmen was a reference to the opera ‘Carmen’, where she is killed by the man she loves.

We should also say that this theory has the Max Beesley seel of approval. It was tweeted by @Annabelle_BCFC and the Max retweeted it, adding the comment, 'BANG ON'.

So thanks to Annabelle (and the other members of the twitter-verse for helping us out. We sure needed it.

Does this help? What were your thoughts on the episode? Did you think the ending was fitting to the rest of the series. Let us know below.

And if you missed it, you can see both episodes again on Wednesday 1st January at 10pm and 11pm respectively on Sky 1 / HD

Review: #MadDogs Series 4, Episode 1

24/12/2013

Picture
Here at Philip Glenister Fans we have once again taken full advantage of Sky's decision to show the first episode of Mad Dogs Series 4 early via their On Demand service and we can now bring you our review of episode one.

It is (mostly) spoiler free, but we will put it under a cut for those who don't wish to read. Suffice to say, it's a very good episode and we can't wait for the concluding part!

Nothing ever goes right for the Mad Dogs. We, the viewers, have come to know that by now, but it seems that Quinn, Baxter, Woody and Rick haven’t quite learnt this lesson…

Finally free from the CIA the boys are reunited for Baxter’s daughter’s wedding. They all say they’re getting on okay, but it soon become clear that that’s not the case at all. Then Rick tells them of his great idea to make them rich again.

After some hilarious scenes involving snooker cues, a fire extinguisher and a fish tank, two star cameos by Phil and John’s real life spouses (Beth Goddard and Kate Magowan) and some brilliant dancing from Phil(!) the quartet decide to go along with Rick’s plan. Which doesn’t bode well, because let’s face it; Rick is hardly the brains of the outfit, is he?

Skip forward two months and all seems hunky dory… the lads (and some of their partners) are back in Cape Town, and meeting up at Quinn’s beautiful and seemingly very secure house. But then, in a chilling shout out to the first series, Rick finds a dead goat floating in the swimming pool and the lads start to wonder if they’ve actually escaped from their past misdeeds. Something that the viewer has known the answer too for a while now. And the final scenes confirm that yes, their past has most definitely come back to haunt them… in a fatal way.

Some of the camera angles are a little strange, but it doesn’t detract from the feel of the episode or the acting. You can tell that these four (six, if you include Beth and Kate) are very close in real life… it bleeds through into the characters and their relationship. And the episode does still manage to pull off the tricky feat of balancing both comedy and thriller elements in equal measure.

We also felt that it was perhaps a little stretched out in parts near the beginning… We wonder if it would have flowed better if it had been one 90 minute special rather than two hour long episodes. But one thing is for sure… We cannot wait for the concluding episode because despite the surreal, wacky and dark nature of this show – We’ve grown to love the four leads (well, perhaps not so much Rick, because he can be a bit of a moron) and we will be sad to see their story end.

Mad Dogs: The Finale will air on Sky 1 (and Sky 1 HD)  on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th December at 9pm. Sky’s On Demand users can get the first episode now via their Sky boxes.
