Disappointing start for series 2 of #BigSchool

30/8/2014

Series 2 of Big School got off to a somewhat disappointing start in terms of ratings last night, gaining just 2.85 million viewers overnight (14.2% audience share). This is less than any of the series 1 episode overnights; the opening episode of last series attracted 4.24 million, rising to 5.28 million after 7days.

The new series also received mixed reviews in the press and on social media. T
he Daily Mirror said:
As it returns for a second series, Big School really seems to have found its comedy feet. Big School is well enough written to survive Walliams' camp, asexual gurning and the dream cast add extra polish to an already shiny script.
The Daily Telegraph also enjoyed it, remarking that Big School has grown up
...the desperate misogyny had subsided into a gentle brand of juvenile wit. At times, [Philip] Glenister threatened to steal the show as Gunn, who had now been drafted in to teach Geography (or, as he beautifully puts it, jog-raffy, stress on the raff).
However, the Scottish Herald and The Independent were less than impressed with the episode, with the latter commenting that
Big School Series 2 doesn’t make the grade. The problem is that it's trying too hard to be funny. it isn’t quite sure what it wants to be. Is it a surreal comedy... a dramatic comedy... or it is the cringe-y schoolboy humour of Little Britain...?
The Twitter-verse was littered with comments about the show too; the majority quoting one-liners from the show or praising specific performances. We've retweeted a lot of those mentioning Phil, so check out our Twitter feed to see those.

When the consolidated ratings come in, the 2.85 million will rise but it's hard to see how this episode will come close to competing with last series. Hopefully, there will be an increase as the series goes on. Finger's crossed.

It is fair to say that out of all TV genres, comedy is probably the one that divides audiences the most. We don't all have the same sense of humour or laugh at the same things... if we did, the world would be a very strange place.

Perhaps mainstream BBC One isn't the best place for Big School at the moment, or perhaps it's suffering from being aired straight after another comedy that's aimed at a completely different target audience. What we can be sure of though, is that it's great to have Phil back on our screens, even if not everyone agrees!

BBC One have released the trailer for the second series of staffroom comedy, Big School. The trailer, which shows that the rivalry between Mr Gunn (played by Philip) and Mr Church (played by David Walliams) is still as large as ever and that Mr Gunn might possibly be going up in the world...

Alongside the trailer release, the BBC also confirmed that Big School would air on Friday 29th August at 9.30pm.

Catherine Tate presents Philip Glenister and David Walliams with a special gift

19/6/2014

Catherine Tate has presented her Big School co-stars, Philip Glenister and David Walliams with a caricature portrait of their characters to mark the end of filming series 2.

Catherine, who plays French teacher Miss Postern, had her PA contact Simon Ellinas, a caricaturist in London, giving him just four days notice to create the masterpiece... a copy of a promotional shot from the first series.
I had to crack on as soon as possible and started working from the one photo that  Catherine wanted me to work from. A rather posed publicity shot. Normally, it’s better to work from several photos but time being of essence and moulding my meagre talents to the client’s demands I hacked out a reasonable composition, coloured in Photoshop and sent it to the printers and framers for finishing off.

On the Thursday, I hand-delivered the four framed caricatures by carefully carrying them in a package on the tube all the way from High Barnet to South Wimbledon. Catherine Tate herself came to reception to collect them and she couldn’t have been nicer. The report back from her PA was that they were delighted with the caricatures although I am hoping to get some photos of the stars with their framed gifts!
You can see a photo of the completed portrait below and read more on Simon's blog.

VOTE NOW! Philip longlisted for 2014 TV Choice Awards

27/5/2014

Picture
Philip has been long-listed for Best Actor in the 2014 TV Choice Awards for his new BBC Drama From There to Here.

The show itself is also up for 'Best New Drama' and Liz White is nominated for 'Best Actress'

You can vote on the TV Choice website. As From There to Here has only just aired and is still being broadcast, there is a chance it will be overshadowed by dramas that have already been concluded so it's really important that as many of Phil's fans vote as possible.

Philip's BBC comedy Big School is also long-listed for Best Comedy and Mad Dogs for Best Drama

Voting on the long-list will remain open until midnight on Friday 20 June and the short-list will appear in TV Choice Magazine on Tuesday 1st July.
