First charitable donation made!!

30/9/2013

Picture
As you may be aware we have a partnership with Amazon.co.uk whereby we earn a small commission for every item purchased through our shop. (To find out more about how these shopping links work, visit our Shop FAQs page.)

Today we are pleased to announce that having received our first payment from Amazon, a charitable donation of £37 has been sent to Momentum, a charity of which Philip is a patron. This commission was raised from January to the end of July (there is always a delay of 2 months before payment) and was made on total sales of £733.22.

We don't know who you are, but we wish to say a big THANK YOU to all the fans who have made purchases from Amazon fansite shop. Your support is greatly appreciated and we hope you will continue with this support in the days to come.

Here is the e-mail acknowledgement of our donation (click image to view a larger version):

Picture
On the Moment-um donation page, it is possible to leave a comment when you make a donation. We indicated that the donation was made on behalf of Philip by visitors to this website. Unfortunately, this remark is not shown in the acknowledgement issued.

Momentum is a registered charity established in 2004 which aims to help children (up to the age of 17) and the families of children, undergoing treatment for cancer in Surrey and Greater London. It was set up by parents who have first hand experience of these life-changing events, with the simple goal of trying to help others in similar circumstances.

We will continue to make donations to charities supported by Philip as and when we receive payment from Amazon (when we accumulate at least £25 commission).

As you can see from the above figures the commission earned is quite small compared to the total amount spent, so we urge you to shop through the fansite wherever possible. You can buy anything that is sold on Amazon - it doesn't have to be Phil-related. Just use the Amazon search box on the shop page. At the time of writing (30th September) we have raised £6.60 towards our next donation but Amazon won't pay out until we hit £25, so please do support this venture, especially as it approaches time to think about Christmas shopping.

If you struggle to remember, why not add our Shop URL to your favourites or bookmarks and label it as Amazon?

Thanks again for all your support!!

Life on Mars features in BBC's TV's Top 10 Endings

28/9/2013

Picture
In anticipation of the series finale of US drama 'Breaking Bad', the BBC have published a feature showcasing some of the shows that got their dying moments right, and the ones that failed spectacularly.

Life on Mars is one of the shows mentioned in the feature and here's what the BBC had to say that incredibly memorable ending. (Note: It probably doesn't need saying, but if you've still not seen the ending, don't read on!)

After an accident, modern-day detective Sam Tyler (John Simm) woke up in 1973, when men were men, and men were also sexist alcoholics in bad trousers.

Over two series, viewers were left to wonder whether his predicament was real, or a fitful by-product of his coma. In the final episode, Sam learned that corrupt cop Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) was the "tumour" in his brain. If he could get rid of Hunt, he could go home. The operation (get it?) was nearly over.

Then, he was told the exact opposite: He really was in 1973, and suffering from amnesia after a car crash.

Eventually, the "real" Sam woke up in a hospital in 2006 - but the writers had one final twist in store. He decided he preferred the 70s after all, and jumped off the hospital roof, sending himself back into a coma, and back into the arms of his dream girl, Annie.

The Guardian called it "the perfect finale" but the Express declared the "shaggy dog story" was ultimately "baffling".

Still, it fared better than the short-lived US remake, where Sam turned out to be an astronaut on the first manned mission to Mars, trapped in a malfunctioning hibernation chamber.
It's not the first time that the ending of Life on Mars has been highlighted; in 2008 it was voted the #1 TV ending beating the likes of Only Fools and Horses, One Foot in the Grave, Frasier and many more.

But, 6 years on, what do you think of the ending to Life on Mars? Would you have done it differently? Tell us how below.

UK's Drama channel to broadcast 'State of Play'

25/9/2013

Picture
The UK channel 'Drama' has announced it will air political thriller, State of Play for the first time in October.

The landmark drama that put David Morrissey, Bill Nighy, John Simm, James McAvoy and Philip Glenister on the map, State of Play is an outstanding and edge-of-your-seat drama from the pen of Paul Abbott, who also wrote for Philip in Clocking Off.

When Sonia Baker, a young political researcher, is killed on the Tube her high profile Labour MP boss (David Morrissey) is devastated. The press smell blood and questions are asked about the nature of his relationship with Sonia. And when one of the police officer assigned to the case is murdered, DCI Bell (Philip Glenister) is called in to take over the investigation.

The story is pursued by The Herald, its editor Cameron Foster (Bill Nighy) and its reporter, Cal McCaffrey (John Simm), who was Stephen's former campaign manager. Cal is uncomfortable with pursuing what amounts to a domestic scandal until his colleague Della (Kelly Macdonald) discovers a surprising link between Sonia's death and the murder of black teenager, Kelvin Stagg.

Cal is led into the worlds of big business and government, as well coming to terms with a twist that makes the investigation more personal than he could have ever imagined.

State of Play will begin on Wednesday 9th October at 9pm on Drama (Freeview: 20, Sky: 166, Virgin: 190)

Could you donate to help keep the site up and running?

24/9/2013

On October 27th, the fan site will celebrate its first birthday! Wow, that year has certainly gone quickly. It’s been a great year, both for us and for Philip, and we’re proud to have reached this milestone… hopefully the first of many.  However, it also means that it’s time for the site’s fees to be paid.

Now, while we are (and are committed to staying) an advertising free, non-profit making site, the current economic climate is going to make it a struggle to keep the site online next year without money from outside sources. So we have taken the decision to ask for donations to help keep us afloat.

We have opened a GoFundMe page where you can make donations via debit or credit card or PayPal. It's perfectly secure - we don't receive any of your bank details. You can even remain anonymous if you don’t wish others to know how much you’ve donated.

This isn't a decision we have taken lightly and we are grateful for each and every donation – large or small. If every visitor to our site in the last month reads this and donates £1, we would be more than adequately funded for a good few years, but not everyone can or will donate. And that's fine – we appreciate that some people don’t have the means or the inclination.

We’ve set the goal as £100 to allow some flexibility in how long we secure the sites future for. Any money that isn’t spent on the site’s future at this time will be sent to a charity endorsed by Philip.

Please do consider making a donation, so we’ll all have somewhere to go to share our love of Philip Glenister.

From There to Here filming - Exclusive report and photos

22/9/2013

After seeing on Twitter that Philip was filming in Manchester City Centre’s northern quarter, we dispatched our Manchester-based admin to go and see what she could see. Here’s her report… (as always, click on images to view larger versions).

After quickly finishing my Sunday dinner, off I went. I arrived in the city at just about half past four and made my way to the location, which was the NCP car park on Tibb Street. (For those of you that know Manchester, this is in front of Sacha’s Hotel and Afflecks Palace.)

The car park had black boards up around two sides of it and parked on it where several 90’s police cars, ambulances and a fire engine. It was rather quiet, but as the few crew members who were there weren’t packing up I decided to wait it out for a bit.  Quite a few people walking past looked concerned that there had been an actual crime, despite the emergency vehicles clearly being out of date. I explained to a couple of people that it was the BBC filming a drama etc.
About half an hour later I overheard a conversation saying that cast should be arriving in about 15 minutes and that they were going to finish off filming from this morning. After speaking to a couple of security guards, neither of whom knew who Phil was (shocking!), I managed to speak to a couple of crew members and they said he was possibly coming back, but they weren’t sure.

Again I decided to hang around and about 20 minutes later a people carrier pulled up and out stepped Liz White and Phil!! He entered the set and started chatting to producers as the scene was being set up. After having his make-up touched up he and Liz were stood around for about ten minutes, laughing and joking with each other to pass the time. At one point Phil started pointing something out to Liz – I wonder if it was from their time on Life on Mars.

Just before the scene began filming a police helicopter flew over, delaying the start by a couple of minutes and Philip was clearly very interested, looking up at the sky and wondering what was going on. Then they called action and Phil and Liz when from chatting and joking to in their characters in a matter of milliseconds. Quite a talent to have.

The scene was an aftermath scene, taking place shortly after the bomb detonates. Phil had his arm around Liz, who was dressed in a dark blue apron, and was leading her towards the paramedics. “Excuse me!” he called in his Mancunian accent, although it wasn’t as rough as Gene’s. “This lady’s been ’urt. Can someone take a look?” He hands Liz’s character over to a paramedic and then looks around that the ‘devastation’ (which I assume will be put in later via the wonders of CGI). He had his hand on the back of his neck as he surveyed the scene and looked quite shaken. He then spoke to another paramedic, but we couldn’t hear what was being said. From the look on Phil’s face though I assume he was told that it had been a bomb, rather than something like a gas explosion. He took another look around before being summoned back to Liz’s character. Then the director shouted cut!  Great work from all involved. The extras for the scene included a couple in wedding attire, so not a good day for them in the show!

They moved a few vehicles around and shot the scene from a different angle. This angle took two goes to get right, but it wasn’t anything Phil/Liz had done wrong. Then a voice came over the crew’s walkie talkies to say that Liz was released and Phil needed to go and change for the next scene.

As he returned to his car, he walked right passed me but I was too star-struck to actually call out to him. Plus he was surrounded by crew etc. and I went a bit shy. I cursed myself as soon as the car drove off but resigned myself to the fact that that was it – at least I’d seen him and I got to see some filming.
I began the walk back to my car and as I did so noticed some of the crew walking past me with equipment on a trolley. It so happens that the location for Phil’s next scene was at the junction of Mangle St/Back Piccadilly – which was on my way to the car park.  It’s a bit of a back alley and looks like the entrance to a nightclub…
I hung around for a bit more, watched them set up a scaffold for lighting etc. but it started to get dark and I was alone in the city, on the evening of the derby football match. There was already a heavy police presence indicating trouble so with one last wistful look at the set in front of me, I turned around and left.
Hopefully, as the whole thing is being filmed up here, I will get another chance to meet Phil, but if not – I got to see him work his magic as an actor, and I think that’s just as good!

Well, there you go – we’ll add this to out fan reports page as well. Photos will also go in the From Here to There image gallery.

We also have a selection of photos from Rachel (@thereadaftbear) who was lucky enough to see the morning shoot. Thanks for letting us use these Rachel!
