From There to Here: reaction to drama portraying IRA Manchester bomb
A haze of nostalgia descended over Manchester tonight as the city sat down to watch BBC drama From There to Here. Twitter lit up with reviews, memories and quips throughout the hour-long programme.
Based around the 1996 IRA bombing of the Arndale, the show remembers a city caught in football fever on June 15, when the biggest bomb ever to explode on mainland Britain goes off. Just 90 minutes earlier, police had received a coded warning about the 3,000lb device and began to evacuate shoppers – but the BBC focuses on the explosion, the devastation of the city centre, and the human fallout of characters who feel they have been given a second chance.
In the first episode, this revolved around a feuding family’s peace negotiations, which are cut short by the bomb. Starring Philip Glenister and Bernard Hill, it had viewers divided.
