Family Torn Apart
Philip Glenister plays a man caught up in a bomb attack that changes his life forever...
It's June 1996 and the nation is gripped by football fever. But on the day of England's Euro 96 match against Scotland at Wembley, and IRA bomb rips through Manchester's city centre, injuring more than 200 people.
Factory owner Samuel and his sons Daniel and Robbo, are caught in the blast along with cleaner Joanne. They're lucky to survive but the blast sets of a chain of events that changes all of their lives...
'Samuel and Robbo don't see eye to eye, so Daniel tries to use the football to bring them together,' says Philip, who plays Daniel in the three part drama. 'But when the bomb goes off in the pub they're in, it gives them all a different perspective on life.
Following the blast, Daniel gives Joanne a lift home and it provokes a change in him. Daniel was adopted by Samuel when he was five and is now married to Clare. But meeting Joanne stirs up old memories and unexpected feelings. 'Daniel is sure the estate Joanne lives on is where he spent the early years of his life,' explains Philip. 'Being back there awakens something in him and he ends up falling for Joanne!'
The story spans four years, and secrets emerge about Daniel and his family as the millennium draws closer. But Philip says the hardest part of his role was having to relieve England's heartache at Euro 96. 'We did the scene where England lost to Germany on penalties 20 times,' he says. 'It was utter hell!'
