Sam Tyler (John Simm) is an ambitious young detective determined to keep the streets of 21st century Manchester safe. However, the hunt for a serial killer becomes a personal vendetta when Sam suspects his girlfriend has been kidnapped by the very man he's tracking down. But after a near-fatal car accident, Sam wakes up, dazed and confused, in 1973, struggling to understand what's real. Has he gone back in time? Is he in a coma? Or has he simply gone insane?
His new boss is hard-nosed DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) a man who gets results by trusting his gut instincts and using a 'fist-first, question later' policy. Thrown head-first into this new world, Sam faces some of the hardest cases he has ever known. He has no idea why his is in 1973, but maybe if he can work out the reason, he can get home...

Manchester and Salford Police Station (Various Episodes): Stopford house, Stockport. (map)
One of a number of architectural creations using pre-cast concrete slabs to appear in Stockport in the 60s and 70s. It was built to house the offices of Stockport Council and still serves in that role.

Derelict Land where Sam wakes up in 1973 (Episode 1x01): Pollard Mill, Ancoats (map)
The former mill site on Pollard Street, Ancoats is where Sam wakes up in 1973. At the time of filming the mill that used to be here was being demolished, Today the site has been cleared and built on. The billboard you can see in the second picture is where Sam looked at the sign "Manchester's Highway in the sky, Coming Soon".

Mortuary (Second Series): Victoria Baths, Chorlton-on-Medlock (map)
Victoria Baths in Manchester were used for the mortuary during the second series as well as other locations like the Irish Community Centre. The building, which is Grade 2 listed) was the winner of BBC's 2003 Restoration series and is open as a heritage centre. Official website.
Note: The morgue in the first series was a real-life morgue at St Thomas' Hospital, Stockport
