Philip Glenister helps Wales win #CelebCup @TheCelticManor

5/7/2015

Picture
Wales have won the Celebrity Cup for the first time, and couldn't have done it without a brilliant performance from Philip.

Philip, who qualifies to play for Wales because of his mother, admitted to feeling apprehensive ahead of the tournament. "I am bum-clenchingly nervous,” he said before teeing off. “I prefer to go down the Bubba Watson route and have plenty of noise on the first tee. I hate that moment when it all goes silent, it’s terrifying.”

Despite his apparent nerves, Phil put in great performances to win his first two matches on Saturday, firstly paired with Andrew Howard against Ireland's Ronnie Whelan and Brian Ormond, and then alongside Gareth Bale to beat Scotland's Alan Hansen and Kenny Dalglish, with Phil netting a hole in one on the fourth.

With Wales holding a narrow lead, Phil teamed up with team captain Rob Brydon for the third and final match on Sunday against England's Zoe Hardman and Matt Banahan. They won by two holes to set up a final against Scotland.

For the final, Philip was playing alongside Andrew Howard once more and faced Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen. Wales won all three of the matches in the final, Philip and Andrew winning by two holes.

Thanks to fans that were there on the day, we have a good number of photographs from the event which can be found in our dedicated 2015 Celebrity Cup gallery. We also have two videos courtesy of Celtic Manor Resort; the first is of Philip teeing off in Saturday's match against Scotland, and the second is of the Welsh celebration, where Philip has a little bit of an issue getting the cork out of his champagne bottle!

The event was held at the Celtic Manor Resort and was in aid of the Caron Keating foundation.

Photos: Philip Glenister attends @momentumcharity golf day

18/6/2015

Last week, Momentum held their tenth annual charity golf day and were joined by patron, Philip and a host of other celebrities including: Sky TV tennis presenter Barry Cowan, Bob Pugh from Game of Thrones, football legend Steve Coppell, George Asprey who plays Scar in The Lion King, comedian and writer Dominic Holland and Nick Knowles and Billy Byrne from DIY SOS.

Momentum have kindly provided us with two photos of Phil at the event, which you can see below. The winning team were from law firm Slater & Gordon, but Philip was not part of that team, but spectators say he playd well.

Thanks to ticket sales, several generous donations, matched funded players and an auction (hopsted by comedian Dominic Holland), the event raised just over £10500. Momentum would like to thank all who played or contributed.

Philip Glenister lined up for Celtic Manor golf tournament

17/3/2015

Philip will return to the greens of South Wales this summer for the third edition of the Celebrity Cup at the Celtic Manor Resort. Philip will spearhead the home challenge for Wales, alongside Rob Brydon and Gethin Jones, as they try to reach the final for the first time when they take on their celebrity counterparts from England, Ireland and Scotland from July 3-5.

Last year’s winning captain, Mike Tindall, has confirmed he will be back to defend the trophy and the Rugby World Cup winner will be joined in the England team by another Celebrity Cup ever-present, Dragons’ Den entrepreneur Peter Jones.

The popularity of the Celebrity Cup among spectators and players alike is underlined by the fact that the first two names announced for the Ireland team have also played in the event for the past two years. Pop stars turned TV personalities Keith Duffy and Brian McFadden will once again bring their irresistible Irish charm to the event which mixes golf, glamour and fun. Soccer legends Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen and Gordon Strachan all return to the Scotland fold in 2015 after missing last year’s event because of media commitments at the World Cup in Brazil.

Celtic Manor Chief Executive Ian Edwards said: “We are delighted to see that so many stars from the worlds of sport and showbiz have already signed up for the 2015 Celebrity Cup.

“The Celebrity Cup has been a resounding success since we launched the event in 2013 and we have seen a real appetite from the public for watching celebrities competing outside of their usual comfort zones on the golf course. We are all looking forward to hosting another fantastic tournament this summer.”

More stars are signing up to compete in teams of six for the event, which promises a full family day out with an interactive retail village and the opportunity to get up close to watch the celebrities in action on the Roman Road Course.

Thousands of golf fans and celebrity spotters flocked to Celtic Manor in the sunshine last summer to watch England gain revenge over 2013 champions Scotland in the final. As well as top-notch golfing action and on and off-course banter, there will be Q&A interviews with other sports stars and live music in the tented village.

Visitors can also experience the VIP treatment in hospitality or the Premier Lounge, and join the celebs for a glittering gala dinner on the Saturday evening.

#CelebrityCup - Day Two

6/7/2014

The second day of the Celebrity Cup got underway at Celtic Manor just after 10 o’clock this morning with Philip teaming up with Gareth Edwards to face Scotland’s Kenny Logan and Gavin Hastings. Wales were second to Scotland who were leading the table so it was important that Wales won as many holes as possible.

Sadly that wasn’t to be the case. Despite Phil having a better game in the third round (scoring a birdie and making par on several holes), he and Gareth could only draw with Kenny and Gavin – with both teams taking 4.5 holes.

The other matches didn't got the right way either and Wales finished the group joint second with England on holes won, but England went through as they had played less shots overall.

Despite this there was plenty of camaraderie between the stars in the morning session, as Gethin Jones and Rory Lawson paused for a hug, and Philip Glenister put his arm round Gavin Hastings shortly before they finished their final shots before lunch. When Glenister and Edwards lost drew with Scotland shortly after noon, Edwards told the crowd: "We'll be cheering on Woosy and all those guys in the coming weeks but it's our day today and you (Philip Glenister) really represented Wales."

Philip replied: "I was inspired, I was playing with a legend."

So Wales faced Ireland in a third place playoff this afternoon, with both teams eager not to finish last. Phil was paired with Andrew Howard and faced Danny O’Carroll and Martin O’Neill. Philip and Andrew actually lost their match 4-5, but it didn’t matter too much to the final result. In the end, it was Wales who prevailed, beating Ireland 15-12 to claim the third spot.

England went on to win the final  – beating reigning champions Scotland - to be crowned 2014 winners

Here’s a selection of photos from the weekend – visit our dedicated gallery to view more.
We have also created a short video montage of some of Phil's moments from the tournament thanks to Russ Lindsay and The Celtic Manor Resort for the clips:

Celebrity Cup - Day One

5/7/2014

Philip has been strutting his stuff on the golf course again today. This time in the Celebrity Cup at Celtic Manor. The cup is a four nations tournament, with teams from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland competing against each other over 9 holes for the trophy. Phil is playing for the Welsh team (due to his mother’s heritage) alongside, Gethin Jones, Rob Brydon, Geraint Hardy, Andrew Howard and Gareth Edwards.

Wales had a great start – heading straight to the top of the leader board after beating Ireland in the first round. Philip was paired with Andrew Howard for his match and was drawn against the pairing of Ronan Keating and Brian McFadden. Philip and Andrew won the match 5-4, despite Philip hitting 3 bogeys and 3 double bogeys!

After the first round the table was as follows:

                                         THRU        VPAR      TOTAL
1              Wales                   9              +19            15
2              Scotland               9              +16            14
3              England                9              +18            13
4              Ireland                  9              +17            12

After the first round, all the celebrities took part in a ‘hole-in-one’ challenge on the 9th green, in aid of the Caron Keating Foundation and the Bernard Gallacher Defibrillator Campaign. Sadly none of the celebrities made the shot. Luckily, they get another shot tomorrow.

Philip attempts the 'hole in one' challenge
In the second round Wales were drawn against England and Philip was paired with Geraint Hardy to play Mark Foster and Matthew Goode. It was another mixed game for Philip, who again hit a couple of bogeys and double bogeys. Thankfully, partly due to Geraint’s three shots under par, the pair won the match 5-4.

However, despite Wales winning the majority of their matches, defending champions Scotland leapfrogged them to top the table, after beating Ireland. This is how the table looked at the end of the day.

                                       THRU           VPAR       TOTAL
1              Scotland            18                +34            29
2              Wales                17                +36            26.5
3              England             17                +32            24.5
4              Ireland               18                +34            23

The players then spent the evening relaxing at a star-studded gala dinner at the resort. Let’s hope they aren’t feeling too delicate in the morning. The day will kick off with Wales against Scotland in Round 3 (Philip will be paired with Gareth Edwards and they will face Kenny Logan and Gavin Hastings). Then after another hole in one challenge, the top two teams will battle it out in the final, whilst the bottom two will face a third/fourth place play off.

If you can make it to Newport, South Wales for the second day, there will be tickets available on the gate, priced at £22. If you can't make it you can follow the live scoreboard here and keep an eye on our dedicated photo gallery for shots of Phil from the event.
